The Farm Implement Capital of America: Moline, IL

“Moline” is an adaptation of the French word for mill town. Today, this city is known as the Farm Implement Capital of America for that reason!

Moline straddles the Illinois-Iowa border on the Mississippi River. The Mississippi Valley is very scenic and the cities don’t fit the Midwestern stereotype of pancake-flat farmland, though you’ll experience that soon enough if you drive east or west from the cities.

Moline has tons of older and newer neighborhoods to choose from, but when it comes to pricing and the cost of living, this area is unmatched! If you’re looking for a more modern feel, Bettendorf is the place to be. If it’s the nightlife you’re looking for, Rock Island and Davenport have their fair share of entertainment and great places to eat, too, and for a taste of the big city? Chicago’s only about three hours away via the interstate!

The Moline, IL Community

Living in Moline is a dream. In fact, compared to the rest of the country, the cost of living in Moline is 22% lower! Job growth is positive, and when it comes to those who commute, the average commute time is less than 15 minutes (compared to the 25+ minute national average, that’s a lot of time back!). If you’re visiting the area, the weather is very pleasant from May to September. It does cool off quite a bit in the winter, but there’s plenty to do during every season, no matter when you decide to check out the city.

The beauty of Moline is that everything is easily walkable. The John Deere Pavilion, hotels, restaurants, microbreweries, shops, nightspots, and the TaxSlayer Center (the QC’s 10,000 seat arena that draws top national touring concerts, sporting events, Disney on Ice, Monster Truck shows, and serves as the home for the Quad City Storm professional hockey team and the Quad City Steamwheelers arena football team) are all within a short distance.

You’ll quickly see that no matter what type of activity you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Moline (or at least in close proximity to it!) When you’re exploring Downtown Moline, don’t forget that the area also serves as the entry point to the Rock Island Arsenal, a very popular point of interest!

Working in Moline, IL

This vibrant area (as part of the Quad Cities) spans the Mississippi River and the Illinois-Iowa border. It’s been called the “Breadbasket of America,” as the region is a hub for agriculture, particularly because of John Deere’s headquarters located in the heart of Moline in the Corn Belt. The landscape is beautiful. And the slow pace and friendly people mixed with the entertainment and the lively nightly buzz from the surrounding cities make it a perfect place to experience the best of both of those worlds.

As Moline, Illinois has strong ties to John Deere and serves as the global headquarters for Deere & Company, it’s no surprise that John Deere himself has deep roots in the area. Moline History

In 1837, David Sear and his associates built a stone-and-brush dam between the south shore of the Mississippi and Rock Island. This dam provided the water flow for a mill that powered a sawmill, a mill for grinding corn, and other uses. Other factories sprang up and, in 1842, a town was platted with the name Rock Island Mills. However, the name Moline was later adopted and incorporation in 1848, the same year John Deere relocated his plow company from Grand Detour to this growing mill town. John Deere has grown to be the dominant business in Moline.

Moline Community

Moline is located on a bluff on the south bank of the Mississippi River directly across from Bettendorf, IA. The city of Moline is also adjacent to Arsenal Island, originally known as Rock Island. The island was originally established as a government site in 1816, with the building of Fort Armstrong. It is now the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States. Moline is also home to Western University, which offers undergraduate and graduate programs to students of Illinois, across the nation and around the world.

Attractions and Entertainment

Moline’s downtown area serves as one of the civic and recreational hubs of the Quad Cities; many events take place at the 12,000-seat TaxSlayer Center (formerly known as The MARK of the Quad Cities) and at John Deere Commons. Downtown Moline features hotels such as Radisson and Stoney Creek Inn and commercial areas such as Bass Street Landing and the historic 5th Avenue. The John Deere Company has been a major influence on Moline for over 100 years. In the late 1990s, John Deere Commons was built, a multi-million dollar entertainment and tourism complex containing a hotel, restaurants, offices, a John Deere Collector’s Center (located in a re-created 1950s John Deere dealership), the John Deere Store, and the John Deere Pavilion, a tourist center showcasing the history of agriculture in the Midwest.

The Moline Park & Recreation Department maintains 18 parks including Riverside Park, home to the Riverside Family Aquatic Center and to a busy baseball and tennis complex; Prospect Park, home to the Quad City Music Guild; and the Green Valley Sports Complex. Also visit the Ben Butterworth Parkway, a four-mile scenic trail along the Mississippi River running between downtown Moline to the west and East Moline to the east. The Channel Cat Water Taxi and the Celebration Belle, a non-gaming riverboat both dock along the Parkway.

If you are looking to catch a game, Moline is home to the Quad City Storm, a minor league professional hockey team. The Quad Cities are also home to the Quad City River Bandits, the Single A Midwest League affiliates of the Houston Astros. The River Bandits play their home games at Modern Woodmen Park (formerly John O’Donnell Stadium) in Davenport, Iowa.
